Make "Sun" Glasses

What better way to motivate children to protect their eyes than letting them make their own sunglasses? It's a fun and frugal way to encourage your children to stay safe this summer.

Materials

Directions

1

Discuss with your child a design he would like for his glasses. Any shape you can come up with will work!

2

Draw your design on card stock. Make sure your child colors and decorates the glasses before you cut them out.

3

Cut out the eyepieces, as well as two sides to hold them up.

4

Tape the two sides to the eyepieces.

5

To make these "sun" glasses, cut the cellophane paper to make the lenses. Make sure to measure against the eyeholes of your frame. On the back of your glasses, apply glue around the eyeholes and stick on the cellophane lenses. Wait for the glue to dry before wearing your new pair of "sun" glasses!

Steps for Taking It Further:

  • Language Arts: Have your child "read" the room with his new glasses. He can wear his glasses to find letters, spot words you have hidden or pick out objects around the house and create a story using them.
  • Math: Have your child measure his head to make sure the eyepieces of the glasses will be the correct length/width while you are making the craft.
  • Science: Discuss the reason we need sunglasses (Hint: UV protection!) and do some experiments with the sun.
