A parent and child hold their finished DIY diya.

Diwali gets its name from Dipavali, which in Sanskrit means “row or series of lights.” The Sanskrit word dipa (diya) means “that which glows.” Diwali is observed annually in autumn by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and some Buddhists across the globe. It is also celebrated culturally in several countries. Because this holiday is celebrated by people from different traditions, it has truly become broader than any one of them, and even non-religious people enjoy observing it.

The celebration lasts five days, during which candles, firecrackers and diyas are lit to signify the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. People also decorate with rangolis, intricate patterns made from colored powder, rice or flowers, on the floor of their homes. Food is also a major part of the holiday, with traditional sweets and snacks eaten. It’s a time to celebrate everything that is good in your life!

Materials for the DIY Diya

How to Make a DIY Diya

1

Place the CD flat on a table with its shiny side facing up. Place the tealight in the center of the CD.

2

Add glue to the back of each gem or bead and place them on CD around the tealight. Continue this step until the CD is fully decorated with gems or beads. Make sure that the glue is dry before you handle the CD.

3

Once the glue is totally dry, remove the tealight from the center and turn it on. Replace the tealight to the center and watch as your diya lights up your home! Make more of these Diyas and place them throughout your home to celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights. May your Diwali sparkle with joy!
