Make Your Own Lucky Rock

Lots of people have a special item they keep close by when they need comfort or a bit of luck. Invite your child to think of their own special items. Do you have a special rock or shell that you’ve found? Do you have a different item that is special or lucky for you? For Trini, her special item is her lucky rock! She found it when Molly, Tooey, and Trini when searching for agates to sell so that they could buy an inflatable tube for boating. In the end, they got the tube — thanks to the lucky rock!
In this activity, you and your child can create a lucky rock to wish on. As you and your child make lucky rocks, ask your child to tell you a story about luck. It can be a story they’ve heard previously or one they make up. Ask your child, "Who are the characters in the story? Is there a lucky object such as a rock? What happens in the story?"
Materials

Directions
Paint the top of your rock in one color. Then let it dry.

Flip the rock over and paint the bottom. Let it dry again. (You may need a third coat of paint if the rock is not completely covered.)
Once the paint on your rock is completely dry, it’s time to decorate it. Use paint pens or a small paintbrush to paint your own designs. Allow the designs to dry.

Flip your rock over to paint a different design on the other side. This step is optional but it’s a fun way to add more personal touches to your lucky rock.
Keep your lucky rock close by for comfort, making wishes or just for decoration!

Have your child show the rock to family friends. Talk about color choices and designs and explain how the rock might be lucky. Make more lucky rocks to share!
