Make Bite-Sized Planet Pops

Explore the different planets in our solar system while baking bite-sized replicas with your child. These planet pops taste out of this world!
Materials
Directions
With your child bake a box cake mix according to the directions and let it cool.
Have your child crumble your baked cake in a large bowl. Mix together the cake and a can of icing.

Form at least 9 small balls of the mixture (8 planets and 1 sun). Set them aside on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet.

Place the balls in the refrigerator for at least 3 hours to chill.
While your the cake balls chill, look at Mindy’s Wheel of Planets for inspiration on colors and designs for each planet.
Remove the balls from the refrigerator and insert cake pop sticks into each one.

Set out several different microwave safe containers and fill each one about halfway with plain white icing. These are the containers you will use to decorate the pops. Heat the icing in the microwave (about 15 seconds — until it’s soft, but not too runny), and then add food coloring to each container, creating the desired coloring for each planet.

Time to turn the pops into planets! Dip the cake pops into the colored icing and swirl to cover all around. Get creative here! For Mars, swirl two different colors (red and yellow) and don’t mix completely! For Earth, dip in blue icing then use the green sprinkles to create the continents. The sun will be completely yellow and so on!
