Make Pancakes With Science on the Side!

Sep 24, 2018

Cooking with your child is a great way to explore math and science. While cooking, encourage her to use all her senses to observe what happens. Help your child mix, beat, and heat ingredients to make delicious pancakes. She’ll get a taste of chemistry on the side!

Materials

Directions

1

Make pancake batter from a mix or favorite recipe. Let your child help count, measure, and mix. Ask her to describe what happens to the dry ingredients when the milk or water is added.

2

Put some butter in a hot frying pan. Ask your child what's happening to the butter. Also, what does she see, smell, and hear?

3

Help your child pour batter into the pan, then watch the pancake cook. Talk about what she sees and smells. Ask her, “How is the batter changing?” And, “What do you think is causing the batter to turn into a pancake?” Then ask her what he thinks will happen when you flip the pancake.

4

Sit down together and enjoy your pancakes! While eating, ask your child what she liked most about preparing the pancakes. Encourage her to name some other foods that she would like to make together. Can she think of other foods that change when they are cooked?
