Talk About It: Stepping Out a Routine

“We’ve got to get ready. Let’s get it done!”
Routines are a part of our daily lives. Getting ready for school in the morning and getting ready for bed at night are routines your family does often.
In this video from “Work it Out Wombats!,” Malik, Zadie, and Zeke learn that they need to get ready in a certain order. As they get dressed for the beach, they realize that putting on a bathing suit is hard if you do it after putting on flippers and floaties!
Ask your child to think about the routine they watched in the video. Then, talk about routines using the questions like the ones below, or make up your own questions based on routines that you have in your day.
What did you notice about the video? What questions do you have?
What happened when they got dressed the first time?
What did the Wombats figure out they needed to do to get ready for the beach?
Where do you like to go? What do you do to get ready before you go there? Can you complete the steps to get ready in any order or do you have to get ready in a particular order?
Let’s talk about a routine that you do every day. How do you step out what you need to get done?
Many kids like following routines in their day. By stepping out something that they need to get done, they develop important problem-solving skills that they can use for all their lives.
