Alma's Way

Talk About It: Visiting Someplace New

Nov 6, 2024
Alma and her family arriving at the airport in Puerto Rico.
“Hey hermanito, how about we show them around our island.”

Alma and her family are visiting Puerto Rico! Alma’s dad is excited to show the family the places he remembers from his childhood — and the family is just as excited to see those places that are new to them. Watch this “Alma’s Way” video clip with your child. Then talk about the questions below or make up your own questions based on your memories and experiences.

Welcome to Puerto Rico - La Isla del Encanto!

  • What new places did Alma and her brother get to see?
  • How do you think her dad and uncle felt about showing the rest of the family around the island?
  • How do you think Alma and her brother felt seeing Puerto Rico for the first time?
  • Find Puerto Rico on a map. Is it close to or far from where you live?

Just like Alma’s dad and uncle were excited to share their favorite places in Puerto Rico, think about a time when you were excited to take your child to a favorite place that they hadn’t seen before. It might be someplace far away like your old neighborhood or someplace nearby like your favorite park or ice cream shop. Then ask your child the following questions or make up your own questions.

  • Do you remember when we went to see [fill in your place]?
  • I was really excited to take you there. What do you remember about that day?
  • How did you feel about going someplace new? Were you excited or nervous?
  • Can you think of another new place you’ve been and how you felt about going there?
  • Is there someplace you’ve been that you’d like to show me or a friend?
