Talk About It: Who Takes Care of Us?

Nov 6, 2024
A child and a nurse talk through a video call.
"If I were a nurse, I could help all my friends."

Nurses, doctors, and other health care providers take care of people every day. They use their knowledge, tools, kindness, and compassion to treat injuries and help people get well. But you don’t have to be a nurse or doctor to help people! From kids to adults, everyone can help and care for someone else.

In this video from “What Can You Become?,” we learn about what a nurse does and how they work with other people to take care of kids and families. Watch the video with your child and then ask them the questions below - or make up a few of your own!

  • Have you taken care of a toy or stuffie that’s been hurt?

  • What was wrong with the toy dragon in the video? How did the child want to help make it better?

  • Who did the child meet to help him?

  • How do nurses help people? What tools do they use?

  • Have you ever visited a nurse or a doctor? How did they help you?

  • What questions do you want to ask Kevin the nurse?

  • What are some ways that we can help take care of people and animals?

Many kids like taking care of others. Through pretend play with baby dolls or taking care of a pet or plant, kids can develop nurturing skills that they can use throughout their whole lives.
