Paula Wayne starred alongside Sammy Davis, Jr., in the groundbreaking Broadway musical “Golden Boy” about a black boxer who falls for his manager’s white girlfriend – they shared the first interracial kiss on a Broadway stage. In this outtake from American Masters – Sammy Davis, Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me, premiering February 2019 on PBS, Wayne remembers auditioning for the role and Davis’ kindness: “I believe firmly that ‘Golden Boy’ made a lot of difference in a lot of areas…That’s the beautiful part of theater. Theater can make a difference and I think we did. I know in my case it taught me a lot about compassion and about…acceptance.”
