Opening Segment for Art:21
Laurie Anderson is a multifaceted artist, whose abilities as performer, filmmaker, director, storyteller, and musician were all put to use in making this introduction. Asked by Art:21 to create this introductory segment because her own work has so often explored ideas about place, Anderson created this magical video-work in part on location in New York City and across the Hudson River in New Jersey, and in part in a studio, working with technicians to manipulate and change images and locations. From the early morning tai chi class in New York's Chinatown, to Central Park or a precarious rooftop across the street from the Art:21 offices, to a Japanese supermarket in New Jersey, the creation of this segment was an engrossing collaborative exercise for Art:21's film crew and staff.
