| Barbara Kruger's work
as an artist has long ago been co-opted by the advertising world,
but continues to make viewers think about issues of our consumerist
society. In creating this segment, Kruger sent the Art:21 film crew
out to obtain certain "found" shots for her of McEnroe
on the tennis court, in his gallery, and on the street, and of people
eating, kissing, and exchanging money. Art:21 created McEnroe's
script which he then adapted, and made his own. Kruger selected
from this material, working in
collaboration
with Art:21's editor between Los Angeles and New York. To Art:21,
John McEnroe's physical energy as an athlete and Kruger's visual
energy seem well-matched to our topic of consumption. |
