Opening Segment for Art:21
This witty riff on notions of identity is the result of a multi-step collaboration. Art:21 first approached William Wegman and Steve Martin to ask if they would like to work together, and then discussed possible stories with Wegman. From that point forward, however, Wegman created story boards and concepts which he presented to Steve Martin. A script was prepared for Martin's approval, but on location in Wegman's studio, Martin and Wegman improvised together, embellishing script and story. Many months before this shoot, Wegman had filmed the lawn-mowing sequence in Maine. Finally, he went into the edit room to put these elements together, creating this playful commentary on man, dog, host, and contemporary art.
