art:21 education credits The following classroom, museum, and community-based educators have all helped to make the educational materials for Art:21 possible. Tana Hargest Art21 Director of Education and Public Programs New York, NY Tana Hargest joined the Art21 staff in February 2007 after eight years developing education and new media programs at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Bronx Museum of the Arts. Hargest earned her B.F.A at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and an M.F.A at the Rhode Island School of Design. In addition to her work for Art21, Hargest is a multidisciplinary artist. Her work has been widely exhibited at national and international venues, including Mass MoCA, the Walker Art Center, MIT’s List Visual Art Center, and the Studio Museum in Harlem. Her recent residencies include the MacDowell Colony, Smack Mellon studio program, the Artist in the Marketplace program at The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Harvestworks. Her recent grants and awards include a 2003 Rockefeller Foundation Media Arts Fellowship, a 2002 Individual Artist grant from NYSCA, a 2002 Jerome Foundation grant, and a 2002 Creative Capital grant in emerging fields. Ms. Hargest’s work has been featured in Social Text, Tema Celeste, and in OneWorld Magazine, and has been the subject of catalogue essays published by Mass MoCA, ICP, I-Space, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, MIT, and the Studio Museum in Harlem. Jessica Hamlin Art21 Education Consultant New York, NY Jessica Hamlin has spent the past 10 years in arts education and arts administration. Working with a wide variety of gallery, museum, and community-based organizations, Jessica has focused on bridging educational initiatives with new art and new ideas. Previously located in Boston, Jessica was involved with a comprehensive planning and assessment process for the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs as well as a model collaborative grant bringing cultural and neighborhood partners to Boston public schools. While in Boston, Jessica also taught visual art and art history through the Boston Public Schools/Museum of Fine Arts High School Scholarship Program. Relocating to New York to complete a Masters degree from New York University in Art Education, Jessica was awarded the prestigious Arch Award for community service. Most recently Jessica coordinated and taught the educational programs at the not-for-profit gallery Art in General as well as served as the Director of Pratt Institute’s community-based Saturday Art School. A member of the College Art Association (CAA) and the National Association of Art Educators (NAEA), Jessica presented her research on multicultural education in the arts at their national conference in 2001. Stephanie Diamond Stephanie is an artist and educator blending photography, community, and activism. Formerly the Director of Education and Community Relations at Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, NY and the Education and Community Coordinator for P.S.1 in Queens, NY, Stephanie has also served as an educational consultant in Bronx, NY. Toby Levine Tobey Levine is an educational consultant who works with a diverse range of production companies to develop educational materials and programs. Laura Recht Art21, New York, NY Laura Recht has spent 10 years in non-profit management in development, education, and program design. She has designed after school, summer recreation, literacy, arts learning, and other related programs. In 1999, she created a documentary on a NYC dance school for WNET - Thirteen's "MetroArts." She holds a Master's degree from NYU's Gallatin School, and graduated Magna cum Laude from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts where she was a University Scholar. She was the Recipient of the 1992 Dean David Oppenheim Award for Outstanding Student Service. She has been a Buddhist for seven years, practicing with the SGI-USA. Recht also worked as the Director of Education for the first season of Art:21.
Kristine Bowen Director of School & Tour Programs, Orange County Museum of Art Newport Beach, CA Kristine Bowen is an art educator who received her bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley in Art History and her Masters degree from New York University in Art Education. Now the Director of School & Tour Programs at the Orange county Museum of Art, Bowen is the former visual art teacher at the High School for Legal Studies in Brooklyn, NY. George Barbolish Visual Art Teacher, Mountain View High School Kingsley, PA George Barbolish is a Visual Art teacher, including crafts and interdisciplinary curriculum, at Mountain View High School in Kingsley, Pennsylvania. Thi Bui Visual Art and Social Studies Teacher, High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology, Brooklyn, NY Thi Bui teaches Global Studies and Art at the High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology in Brooklyn. She likes to do things in twos: having studied both Art and Legal Studies at UC Berkeley, and later Sculpture at Bard College and Art Education at NYU, she mixes disciplines regularly in her practice as an artist and a teacher. Ann Marie Castelgrande Visual Art Teacher, Willard Elementary School Scranton, PA Ann Marie Castelgrande is a visual art teacher at the Willard Elementary School and an Adjunct Professor at Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Lisa Charde Art21 Intern After graduating from NYU with a Masters in Art Education, Lisa is pursuing museum education in Raleigh, NC. Dipti Desai, Ph.D. Director of the Program in Art Education, New York University New York, NY Dr. Desai is an Associate Professor and Director of the Art Education Program. Prior to coming to NYU She taught art education at SUNY-New Paltz and was the Co-Director of the controversial 1997 National Arts Now Conference: "Subject to Desire: Refiguring the Body." She has extensive experience teaching students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds at all levels in the United States, India, and New Zealand where she taught courses in Education at Victoria University in Wellington. She has published articles in various art education journals examining the politics of representation in multicultural art education. Recent publications include, The Ethnographic Move in Contemporary Art: What Does it mean for Art Education, Studies in Art Education, Working with People to Make Art: Oral History and Artistic Practice, the Journal of Social Theory in Art Education, and Imaging difference: the Politics of Representation in Multicultural Art Education, Studies in Art Education. Desai serves on the editorial board of Studies in Art Education and Journal of Cultural Research in Art Education. Her current research interests include critical pedagogy in art education, multiculturalism, feminism, contemporary art and postcolonial theory and globalization in relation to visual culture. Her current work examines the intersection of popular memory and art through the artworks of six women artists who use ethnography or oral history as an integral part of their artistic process. Amanda Donnan Art21 Intern Pittsburgh, PA A recent graduate from Pennsylvania State University, Amanda Donnan worked with Art21 on Season Three related education materials and programs. Currently living in Pittsburgh, Amanda is pursuing museum education. A.O. Forbes Geography Teacher, Colorado Rocky Mountain School Carbondale, CO A high school geography teacher in Colorado, A.O. Forbes employs classic geographic principles, observing compelling global situations that present students with critical, moral and ethical implications. Forbes is also the founder of the Holden Center, a nonprofit educational consortium that offers educational workshops, as well as graduate-level teacher education, focusing on civic, ethical and intellectual development. In his eleven-year tenure with the Boulder Public schools, Forbes taught American History, Earth Science and Geography and has been honored with several distinguished awards, including the Governors Award for Excellence in 1985 and the National Distinguished Teaching Achievement Award in 1986. With a background in Spanish, Forbes currently serves as a consultant for Latino literacy Initiative. Dina Helal Head of Online Curriculum, Whitney Museum of American Art New York, NY Dina Helal is Head of Curriculum and Online Learning at the Whitney Museum of American Art. She oversees the development of paper, digital, and audio resources for K-12 educators, students, and families. Dina is also an artist working in mixed media. David Henry Director of Programs, Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, MA As Director of Programs, Henry is involved in all aspects of program planning for the ICA’s new 60,000 sq. ft. facility set to open on Boston’s waterfront in 2006, including education, gallery interpretation, film, media and performing arts. Henry was formerly the Head of Education at the RISD Museum in Providence, RI, where he administered all areas of the Museum's educational programs including adult public programs, family and children's programs, outreach to teachers, students, and hospitals, the docent program, and collaborative programs with other community and cultural organizations. Before that, Henry was at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MN, where he created multi- and interdisciplinary programs for students, teachers and families and collaborated with arts and community organizations and school systems to institute new educational initiatives. Henry has also served as curatorial assistant at the Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Rochester and as staff of the education department at the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House. In addition to actively lecturing and publishing, Henry has also served on review panels for state and national councils, as well as on numerous boards and advisory councils. Kim Kanatani Director of Education, Guggenheim Museum New York, NY Kim Kanatani is the first Gail Engelberg Director of Education of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York City. As Director of Education, Kanatani works with the education programs at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin, and at the Las Vegas venues to coordinate and work in synergistic exchange with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Prior to joining the Guggenheim, Kanatani was the Director of Education at The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles, which she joined in 1985. Kanatani holds an M.A. in Art Education with teaching credentials in both elementary and adult education. Honored with several professional awards, Kanatani was named the National Art Museum Educator of the Year by the National Art Education Association in 1999. The former Director of the Museum Division for the National Art Education Association, Kanatani has also served as President of Museum Educators of Southern California. Brian McGurl 7th Grade Teacher, Dunmore Middle School Dunmore, PA Brian McGurl is a 7th Grade English teacher at the Dunmore Middle School in Dunmore, Pennsylvania. Juliet Meyers Director of Education and Public Programs, SITE Santa Fe Santa Fe, NM Juliet Myers currently serves as the Director of Education and Public Programs for SITE Santa Fe in Santa Fe, NM. In 1990, Juliet co-founded Fine Arts for Children & Teens (F.A.C.T.), an organization that provides quality visual arts education to local young people, ages 8 to 18, regardless of family income. With co-founder Rosanne Kadis, Myers established and developed F.A.C.T.’s innovative instructional format and curriculum based on the principle that when children and teens make art they enrich and empower their own lives and the community they live in. FACT continues to offer hands-on art-making opportunities for students, teachers and adults, Teacher Trainings, A Teen Mentor Program, and an Internships program for local college students. Carolyn Sutton Director of Arts, Park School of Baltimore Baltimore MD Carolyn Sutton serves as the Director of Arts for the Park School in Baltimore, MD, where she is responsible for arts programming and facultyincluding professional development and curriculum developmentin the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools. From 1981 to 2000, Sutton chaired a multi-discipline arts department and taught visual arts at the Colorado Rocky Mountain School. While in Colorado, Sutton was also active in ArtSource Colorado, a statewide team of teachers dedicated to developing high quality arts programs and teaching practices. In 1999, while on sabbatical from teaching, Sutton received her masters degree from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where she also served as an instructor in RISDs Community Art Program. Prior to his work in Nyack, he taught in the New York City Public Schools for 13 years. Mr. Fusaro lives in Hawthorne, New York with his wife Pam, their newborn son Paul Robert, and a dachshund named Oscar.
