The
Rhode Island Classroom Project
As part of a statewide initiative to bring the art and ideas of
contemporary artists into Rhode Island classrooms, Art:21 and The
RISD Museum have initiated a professional development and evaluation
project with teachers across the state.
In October 2003 fifteen teachers attended a workshop at The RISD
Museum where they reviewed the Art:21 videos, Educators’ Guides,
and Online Lesson Library. After discussing the possibilities for
contemporary art to bridge issues and ideas relevant and compelling
to their students, teachers returned to their classrooms with a
commitment to integrate Art:21 resources into their curricula. Over
the course of the year teachers will share ideas, comments, and
student work on this site. In the spring, participants will reconvene
to discuss and evaluate the use of the materials and share their
experiences in person.
The first classroom project to result from the initial 2003 workshop
at RISD is "A Silhouette Project"
by Amy Van Horn, a visual art teacher at Burrillville High School
in Harrisville, RI. Reviewed by The Providence Journal, Van Horn's
project with her students "challenged her students to create
work that they and others could relate to" and in the process
explored "controversial, contemporary issues."
