Public & Private Space
The public and the private realms are defined by physical and conceptual boundaries—mass media and public streets, personal memorabilia and private interiors. Not just a physical location, public and private can also refer to concepts such as freedoms of speech and religion. Whether telling personal stories to a public audience or projecting a sense of self outwards as a public persona, the realms of public and private are constantly being negotiated. A work of art occupies space but can also be about space. The lessons in this topic address the relationships between interior and exterior spaces, and the boundaries established between them.

Personal Stories in the Public
LESSON 1 | LANGUAGE ARTS
personal stories in the public

Subject Area: Language Arts
Artists: Antoni, Atlas, Osorio, Schorr
Many artists incorporate the intimate stories and objects of other people in work that is exhibited in a public forum. In writing, authors have often revealed the intimate details of real lives. This lesson will look at the way private stories interface in a public arena. Students will look at the way ordinary people contribute objects, stories, and their own likeness to the creation of a work of art, poetry, or story. Relics, keepsakes, and artifacts will be explored for their emotional and inspirational qualities.

LESSON 2 | SOCIAL STUDIES
the face of fame

Subject Area: Social Studies
Artists: Horn, Pfeiffer, Schorr, Wodiczko
In the 1960s Andy Warhol declared that “In the future, everyone will be world famous for 15 minutes.” In 1979 he told the Washington Post, “I’m bored with that line. I never use it anymore. My new line is ‘In 15 minutes, everybody will be famous.’” This lesson will explore the idea of celebrity and give students the chance to create their own 15 minutes of fame through films and photographic images. Students will examine the way artists grapple with and critique media and the cult of the celebrity.

Subject Area: Visual & Performng Arts
Artists: Lin, Puryear, Serra, Turrell
Drawing from a discussion of architecture and the way in which both the public and the private are contained in the design and construction of a building, this lesson will look at a variety of public and site specific works of art to explore the public and private elements of sculpture. This lesson will introduce memorials, site-specific installations, interventions in the landscape, the relationship between a work of art and a building, and architecture as a form of art in it's own right.

"It seems like reality itself is being formatted and tailored for precisely this situation where whatever I do I’m encouraged to think of myself as potentially being on TV or potentially being before an audience."
— Paul Pfeiffer

"...Time and movement became really crucial to how I deal with what I deal with, not only sight and boundary, but how one walks through a piece and what one feels and registers in terms of one's own body in relation to another body."
— Richard Serra
