The public and the private realms are defined by physical and conceptual boundaries—mass media and public streets, personal memorabilia and private interiors. Not just a physical location, public and private can also refer to concepts such as freedoms of speech and religion. Whether telling personal stories to a public audience or projecting a sense of self outwards as a public persona, the realms of public and private are constantly being negotiated. A work of art occupies space but can also be about space. The lessons in this topic address the relationships between interior and exterior spaces, and the boundaries established between them.
