At the dawn of the 21st century, American artists are taking self-expression and the artistic process into uncharted territory. Today's artists are engaging the world and their audiences in vital and surprising new ways. They use an enormous variety of media and draw on sources ranging from pop culture and politics to ethnic heritage, classical models, and deeply personal life experiences. The artists featured in the series represent a cross-section of contemporary art practices and philosophies, and hail from different regions of the United States. Season 1 of

praise for season 1

“When the artists do the talking, something fascinating happens. The world opens out and begins resonating with the unexpected. Artists may charm, irritate, instruct, entertain, confound. But they achieve their effectiveness, essentially, just by being themselves”
– The New York Times, September 9, 2001

“Where ‘Art:21’ shines is in the direct connection it establishes between artists and viewers”
– Boston Globe, September 19, 2001

“…a unique glimpse into the personal experiences, sources of inspiration, and creative processes of 21 artists”
- Sculpture, September 2001

“ The first two episodes, ‘Place’ and ‘Spirituality,’ probe issues foremost in the minds of most Americans this past week, but ‘Spirituality’...brings with it a sense of hopefulness about humanity and our place in the world that’s especially uplifting”
- Seattle Times, September 21, 2001

“...the series captures a cross-section of exceptionally talented artists, their unique thought processes and compelling moments of dedicated work”
- Columbus Alive, September 20, 2001

“Whatever petty social engagements you have planned for September, bag ‘em and settle down to watch ‘Art:21 Art in the Twenty-First Century’ when it airs on PBS”
- Art Juxtapoz, September 2001

“Candidly captured in their raw elements, the artists welcome us, one-on-one, into their complicated, intimate lives”
