From Drawing to Sculpture to Photography to Painting
Ida Applebroog hates labels, which is perhaps why it so often difficult to categorize her work into a single media. Applebroog began a recent series by making drawings fragmented into several sheets of paper. From these drawings, Applebroog sculpted crude statuettes out of modelling clay. After placing and posing the sculptures on a small stage with a black backdrop, Applebroog and her assistant photographed the statues under a variety of lighting conditions. Applebroog then manipulates the images on a computer, cropping the image to focus in on a detail, shifing the color, and adding details such as hair, eyes, and mouths clipped from magazines. Printed on large sheets of paper, Applebroog adds the final touches by hand such as paint, gloss and glitter.
