Artists are inspired in various ways - through collaboration, personal reflection and often, through the materials themselves. In the process, objects are given meaning, connections formed, and boundaries broken.

David & Roberta Williamson: Subjective Objects

In this lesson, students will explore the collaborative work of David and Roberta Williamson. Through examples of the Williamsons’ found object jewelry, three concepts are explored: collaboration, juxtaposition and personal adornment. After participating in investigations dealing with associations and meanings of objects, students will create a piece of jewelry combining a number of found objects that evoke a story or emotion.

Grade level: 8-12

Julie Chen: Thinking Outside the Book

In this lesson students will view the work of contemporary book artist Julie Chen. Investigating Julie Chen’s non-traditional approach to bookmaking and her process, students will contemplate and discuss the definition of a book, consider how books are made, collaborate and brainstorm ways to push the boundaries of books, and explore books as sculpture. Students will create their own art books that have personal meaning and go beyond the confines of a traditional book.

Grade level: 8-12
