Travel Dos and Don'ts
According to Will, a friendly gesture in one country might translate into an
insult in another country. Discuss some basic cultural dos and don'ts in class
that answer some of the following questions:
• Can you think of different types of clothing that may be appropriate or inappropriate to wear in certain countries?
• How do table manners differ among various cultures?
• What kinds of gestures might be misunderstood when you travel from one country to another?
• "Diaries from the Road" featured on the Planet Work Web site is a great
starting place to begin gathering information for these exercises.
Conduct further research to create a better picture of the taboos travelers should be aware of.
Then design a brochure that informs Americans about these dos and don'ts in various countries.
