Bush v. Gore: Ten Years Later

Ten years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down one of the most-watched decisions in its history, ruling 5-4 to stop a statewide recount in Florida after the 2000 presidential election. The decision meant that Republican candidate George W. Bush would win that state's electoral votes, and therefore the presidency.

Here, from our archives, is a segment and discussion with legal experts about the court's decision. The segment gives a detailed look at what the justices said in their arguments in a case that sharply divided the court.

One of the guests, John Yoo, went on to work in George W. Bush's Department of Justice. He became a controversial figure in the debate over how to fight terrorism after authoring several legal memos arguing that the executive branch had the legal authority to torture detainees.
