Schools in the United States have seen almost one school shooting a week since Dec. 15, 2012, when Adam Lanza opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut.

That’s according to a report released by the group, Everytown for Gun Safety, which analyzes and highlights data of 95 school shootings that span 33 states.

Overall, 49 incidents occurred at K-12 schools, and 46 took place on higher education campuses. In the last three months alone, there were 17 cases. One of those cases is detailed below:

October 21, 2013, Sparks Middle School, Sparks, Nevada. Shouting “Why are you laughing at me? Why are you doing this to me?” A 12-year-old Jose Reyes fatally shot a teacher and wounded two 12-year-old students with a 9mm semiautomatic Ruger handgun. His parents told investigators that the gun had been stored in an unlocked case on a shelf above the refrigerator.

Everytown’s paper delves into a series of criteria to better classify the incidents. It compares common factors — whether the shooter committed suicide, or whether they merely attempted. It also considered the outcome of the gun discharge in terms of deaths versus injuries, and how the weapon was obtained.

Focusing on K-12, the majority of guns were taken from the student’s own home. In cases where the shooter’s age was disclosed — which is difficult information to find given incidents are still under investigation or protected by law — 70 percent were minors. More than a third — at least 35 shootings — were the result of an escalated altercation

Three incidents in which a school firearm discharge was determined as self-defense were not included in the analysis.

Mother Jones conducted a similar investigation of their own into the tally, though their results differ. The magazine claims there has been a fatal school shooting every 5 weeks since Sandy Hook. They focused on 21 schools.
