Rum Tum Tugger to return as a rapping feline in ‘Cats’ revival
The 66-year-old British composer said Monday that the musical will undergo a few changes before its 12-week run at London’s Palladium beginning Dec. 6, including the character of Rum Tum Tugger revamped as a “contemporary street cat.”
Based on T.S. Eliot’s poem collection “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats,” the award-winning musical ran for 21 years in London and 18 years on Broadway.
Lloyd Webber told Evening Standard that the revival was a chance to rework the curious cat’s song, “Rum Tum Tugger,” as a rap number.
“I’ve come to the conclusion that “Rum Tum Tugger” was possibly the first ever rap song,” Lloyd Webber said. “T.S. Eliot clearly anticipated rapping in his meters.”
