This is outright political propaganda. Regardless of party affiliation, all U.S. citizens should be outraged by this piece. Poster: Helen Comment: I went into incredulity about how the Republican Congress prevent voters not to voter due to race. Its like the 60's again. LOOK HERE: this Republican Congress broke the civil rights act, and some of the 27th amendments. They cannot do that and it is just wrong. They think they can get off easy and make these people suffer. I think that the Republican Congress wants us to stay by their side forever and take all their sides with not questions ask. This Congress has done nothing for the people. All they did was created a war that the country got ourselves into and still here for nothing. The soldiers cant go home to see their family its making them sick to the gut. Not everybody can have heathcare to get the care that they need especially in children, illegal immigrants come to the country and stay there while us Americans pay for everything they got. The immigrants just be free. Bills get veto because President Bush wont let this country do anything for their benefit. If a Republican president get elected by the people again, all the people with be suffering with the raft and and the trash of what Bush put us through for the last 6 yrs. I hope that a Democratic president just undo everything that Bush as done and correct all of them and give the people what we want and what is fair for us. Bush , his adminstration, and the Republican Congress should go into the lame presidents of century yearbook. No wonder the majority of everybody in the U.S. hates him and dislike him for all the trouble has to suffer because of him, his republicans and his stupid alligations , principle, reasons, comments, and rules. It just makes me sick up to the point. Poster: Kathyrn Comment: It's a shame the major networks aren't shouting this from the rooftops? The American public already knows this administration came into Washington in 2000 through a shameful decision by the Supreme Court. And as I long suspected, we now have proof of more illicit (if not outright criminal) actions to keep power in 2004. I'm glad to have my suspicions validated. These thugs will stop at nothing. The public deserves to know the whole dirty story, and I hope Congress has enough courage to keep it from happening again in 2008. Poster: Laura Comment: I am an Olympia Snowe Republican who is ashamed that her party has been hijacked by greedy, evil manipulators. I forwarded a link to this story to my friends -- we should all be writing the major networks and newspapers and asking them to cover voter caging. Thank you, PBS! Poster: Dan Comment: Look closely at 2000 too please. Poster: Julia Comment: This is abysmal and sordid for the Republicans as well as against the law. They evidently wanted Jim Crow laws again. Since this Republican President as well as the last Repulican Congress, I am not shocked at what we will find out next. Since the Republicans resorted to caging evidently they are afraid they cant win an election on their own merit without breaking the law. The Republican Congress didn't do oversight, so this is what we have. Since some of those same Republicans who didnt do oversight, are now running for President, chances are we will get more of the same and Rove and Cheney's doctrine. If the USA elect another Republican President, we get what we deserve. This is sad. Bush wont protect the borders so let more illegal immigrants into the country. I suppose its in hopes of securing the Mexican vote, while caging other minority votes. Republicans are a despicalbe bunch and Cheney is chief despicalbe leader Poster: Jan Beebe Comment: Thank you so much for this important story. Using the judicial branch in an effort to subvert our democracy is as low as it goes. This scheme takes away the very foundations of any democracy -- free and fair elections. I consider our US Constitution to be one of the greatest documents ever written. This adminstration appears to have spent years searching for ways to exploit any weaknesses. At the very least, it appears to be time for an amendment that puts our federal elections under consistent federal election laws. Poster: Karthik Comment: This outrageous act of denying voters their basic right should create an outrage in this country, but it's sort of becoming a norm rather than a exception. People in this country and around the world are paying the heavy price for letting this kind of an adminstration. WHERE ARE THE MASS DEMONSTRATIONS? WHY ARE PEOPLE NOT GOING TO JAIL FOR THESE ACTS? Poster: DLS Comment: I believe voter caging has been going on since the 2000 elections; my case in point, my husband and I registered to vote (as Democrats) in 2000 in Bay County, Florida with 15 business days to spare. The requirement was 10 business days and yet when we arrived at the voting booth, SURPRISE, we weren't on the rolls and were not allowed to vote that year. I think a class action suit would be the appropriate remedy. Poster: EX Comment: One of the most important issues for our country (and all others) regarding democracy is addressed by this topic. It is good to see the topic move out of the progressive wires and onto PBS. Poster: anonymous Comment: I guess there needs to have enforced voter id voting at the polls in order to reduce fraud. Everyone voting should have to show a valid drivers license and maybe even take a picture to confirm it. Poster: anonymous Comment: Are taxpayer dollars being used to support this partisan rant? What about 2006? Did the Democrats steal 2006? or does stolen elections only apply when Republicans win? Poster: Lise Duraes Comment: This disgusts me! How can our country allow this to happen? Even more incredible is how our government gets away with it. It doesn't seem like we live in a democracy. It seems that with live in a dictatorship. You know the older I get the more I realize our country is just as corrupt as any other country in the world. My bubble has officially busted! Poster: C. Tayborn Comment: We must take the whole electoral process out of partisan hands. We are going thru a long campaign and it doesn't matter if 80% of Americans vote Dem if the Republicans can so easily control the count. Poster: Joanna Hall Comment: I see not even the slightest bit of proof supporting these claims. I see opinion, conspiracy theories and character assassination. Shameful and irresponsible. Poster: Anne Fuller Comment: Thank you for presenting the story. Voting is one part of active citizenship. Followup questions: How easy is it for an individual to find out if she is registered to vote? Poster: Steven J. Willis Comment: Give me a break. Bush won every re-count of the 2000 election. Yet you still cry foul. Want to talk about stolen elections? Let's talk about Kennedy in 1960, LBJ in 1950, Mary Landriu for Senate in 2002, the 2000 senate race in St. Louis, Chicago and Mayor Daley. Poster: Dorothy Rangel Comment: Your expose of voter caging was excellent. But I was frustrated, as I have been throughout this controversy, that the fact that Karl Rove made his fortune in the direct mail business is never connected to this Republican political scheme. This has Rove's fingerprints all over it, precisely because it involves a knowledge of how direct mail works. Please look at it more closely. Poster: Spencer Dow Comment: Is voter caging so as to influence the votes cast, an American Principle? A Democratic Ideal? Poster: Eileen Vivoda Comment: I was frankly appalled at this aspect of fraud. We cannot really call ourselves a democracy when the motto is to win at any cost. Poster: Amy Ayers Comment: Excellent. I think NOW should be an hour-long show. PBS, except for NOW and Bill Moyers is beginning to lean too far to the right due, I suppose, to their corporate sponsors. Poster: Bob Comment: I'm a Democrat. There are good Republicans who need to take back their party from these criminals who will do anything to win. Poster: Bethany Barry Comment: Voter caging, voter suppression and the outrageous illegality of the elections in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006 through manipulation of the Republican-owned electronic voting companies has been massive and largely ignored - THIS MUST NOT CONTINUE!!! Our country is being destoyed through the greed and power-driven corrupt politicians and corporations. We need Clean Elections, which are publicly funded and cannot be bought by lobbvyists and cash. How much longer will this continue before we have become a totally fascist country, run by money and Big Business, bankrupt and with democracy completely eradicated? The media needs to expose this, not hide in the shadow of their own fear of money and Big Business, which is what has been happening. Greg Palast, BevcHarris and Brad's Blog have been steadily covering this, and we need more front-page, ongoing exposure to save our country NOW! Poster: Linda V. Jones Comment: Where are the Americans in this Republican party? Why don't they speak out more against this kind of caging thing? Our military people are fighting, getting maimed, and dying to help a young democracy in the desert. Can these Republican party operatives (Mr. Rove, et al.) truly say they are validating the sacrifices of our military and their families? Is this still America? God help us and this administration. Poster: Petersen Comment: If true, this make Watergate look like an ice cream party. Poster: John Kuhn Comment: Vote caging was one of many methods used in Ohio to steal the state for Bush. An expose on the efforts of Ken Blackwell to disqualify Democratic voters however possible should be done by PBS. The website that tallied Ohio's vote results on election day was hosted by a Tennessee web hosting firm that also hosts national Republican campaign organizations. A full investigation is needed, by someone. Maybe the BBC can do it, our non-PBS media is not up to the task for obvious reasons. - Cincinnati, Ohio Poster: Randy Comment: Why didn't NOW report the emails members of the White House staff, including Karl Rove, sent to the wrong website email address that Greg Palast received? The attached lists of thousands of voters to be challenged? And how voters were challenged simply because they had the same name as a felon? This is the REAL reason why Karl Rove needs to go to jail and the President and Vice President impeached. Willfully violating The Voting Rights Act of 1968 is a Federal offense. We need a Special Prosecutor.... and people need to go to jail. Poster: Dana Comment: In my opinion the Bush Administration has been the biggest disgrace this country has ever faced. This is the first time in my life that I am embarrassed to be an American. Poster: elizabeth shipley Comment: I was very impressed with your report re medium priced housing in London and also the link to Bridgeworks in S.F. I have been interested in co-housing when it was introduced here in the U.S. many years ago and am seriously looking into that when moving back to Oregon. The concept of people living near each other and helping each other out is a marvelous idea. I would like to see thousands of these communities sprout up around the country. I know there is a group in Ventura that would like to get a community off the ground; however, because of land prices, they are having a difficult time doing that. Perhaps you could feature co-housing in a future broadcast. elizabeth shipley Poster: annette stalling Comment: This Republican administration is capable of doing anything to undermind the American People for political gain. They won't stop at nothing. They behavior is very thugish and mean spirit. They have no respect for public opinion, and disregard the public vote, because they think they own America and they want only one party to run America. This is not fair to the people and by the people. Bush should resign from office with a evil heart mentalilty. He wants everything to go his way. O! by the way where is Osama Bin Laden that ought to give this party something else to do but to tamper with votes. America does not belong to the Republican or Bush. Poster: Jack Spelman Comment: God bless the media and investigative reporters for ferreting out such behavior. It may not be illegal but it raises the ceiling on ruthlessness. Poster: Richard Tuckman Comment: The video explains the GOP voter caging in a way that made its illegality more clear than ever before. It also ties together all the various scandals and why I think the White House is hiding behind executive privilege to cover it and the GOP. My one complaint is that this video leaves out is the important and relevant fact that the GOP inserted a provision into the Patriot Act that allowed the White House to circumvent Senate confirmation of replacement US attorneys. They not only fired the people who had the moral courage to not play this nasty game of using the justice department to put the GOP over the USA, they used a terrorism law to go around the Democratic senate to install political hacks as US Attorneys. Poster: Elaine Simon Comment: Thank you so much for daring to speak up and let people know about some of the criminal activities of the people who are trampling on the rights of the American people and the US Constitution. Of all the horrible things that the Bush Administration has done to us, this election fraud is basically the worst, because in stealing the election (twice!!!), it gave them the power to change history for the worse. If Bush/Cheney were not in the White House, we would not be bogged down in an immoral and illegal war, many thousands of people (American, Iraqi, British, etc.), who are now dead, would still be alive; the list of horrors goes on and on. It is inconceivable to me how anyone can justify perpetrating all this death and destruction to satisfy their own greed and lust for power, but obviously many do. Poster: Ellen Comment: Hi- This is a on-target article! I'm glad Iglesias is still the consummate straight-shooter that earned him a stellar rep. and posed such a threat to the Bush Admin. I volunteered to watch over key polling places in Ohio and noticed a pattern of African Americans, especially women and vets, being turned away at the polls because they were not on the voting rolls. Of course, my job was to follow up and I did. I believe that denying someone's valid right to vote is a huge criminal offense. In each of ten cases I saw like this at 1 small polling place, the presumptive voter presented valid ID, claimed they were at the correct location, and when I checked with the County Bd. of Elections, they, in fact, had proper registration. In one case, the woman actually lived ACROSS THE STREET from the polls, but had been turned away, despite valid registration! Strangely, she had been stricken from the official rolls. I intervened and urged her to vote by provisional ballot! However, it was at the discretion of the Ohio Sec. of State/ acting Co-Chair of the Bush Campaign, Blackwell, as to whether to count a provisional vote. It was really disturbing. The presumptive voters often told me that they had been registered Democrats. I don't think they planned to support Bush in 2004... I later read that if Kerry had received just 10 more votes at each precinct in Ohio, he would have WON. Well, 10 would be the number I counted who mysteriously could not vote, despite proper ID and registration that day... Not large enough numbers to be obvious, but certainly enough to steal it! After being on the frontlines, I firmly believe that they rigged the General Election! Poster: Steve Diehl Comment: Dear Sir/Madam: Unfortunately, voter caging is just another example of the methodology of the Republican Right that speaks of their desperate need for power at any cost, just as Iraq is just another example of how inadequate they are in the exercise and stewardship of that power. At heart and in mind, of course, they are devious children of great resource, able by scheming and device to steal power without understanding that their ill-advised adventures damage this nation, the world and all who inhabit it. I guess that Iraq is the poetic response to an election won by voter caging. Those that did not earn the victory used their ill-gotten power to mount a mis-information campaign to invade a country that was no threat to us and that had no WMD. That invasion has cost thousands of lives, billions of dollars and spawned thousands more terrorists. In the meanwhie, the original terrorists go free. One hopes that this report will lead to a proper investigation and exposure of those who created and perpetrated what sounds to be a truly criminal act. Steve Poster: Susan Comment: Its worse than reprehensible..its a criminal act far beyond imagination...Congress should just forget about impeachment...throw their lying, cheating butts out of our House and straight into prison...for life! Poster: gail Comment: Can't thank you enough for validating the suspicions of many: revealing how low some in the GOP would go to usurp one of our most valued rights--not only voting for our candidate of choice, but doing so without fear of fraud effecting the outcome...keep up the good work in all your reporting. Thanks!!! Poster: Cheryl R Comment: What is so shocking is the lengths to which this administration would take voting fraud by firing their own Republican Attorney Generals just to try to steal another election. Of course, when we lack an opposition party in this country, they get away with it. Poster: roman nowicki Comment: For the sake of our freedom, I hope that programs like NOW and Bill Moyers stay on the air. The criminality of the Republicans and the Bush crime family mut be exposed. Poster: Leoule Goshu Comment: This is a brilliant piece on dirty elections invoked by the RNC and the White House. As an African American, I am scared that the 2004 presidental election was improperly conducted. And to find that racist voting cages are linked to the firing of a US federal attorney brings the Bush administration to a new low in politics. Please stick to this story. I hope the private media catches onto this story. Poster: Kay A. Comment: Thank you for broadcasting this. I only became aware of the issue and Greg Palast a couple of weeks ago. I forwarded the information to Oprah's website hoping she would get the information out to the general public and raise awareness. She hasn't yet but I'm very grateful you had the courage to. It's sad to me that I have to discover so much about my own country and what is happening in it from foreign broadcasts. Thank goodness for PBS and the integrity to be truth tellers rather than pass off dribble about celebrities. Who the heck cares about a car chase when the fact that the general election stole tens of thousands of votes from a racial minority. What year are we living in and what country is this? Keep up the good work. Kind Regards, Kay Poster: Michele Snow Comment: Bonechilling! How can we get this out into the corporate media and to Congress which must investigate this now! Each time it appears that Republicans can't get any sleazier ( K St.,Cunningham,DeLay, Gingrich, Abramoff, Lott,Cheney) there's more and more and yet more! These people have no ethics, morals, no values, and no credibility on democracy or anything else; and their family values clearly means their families, not the country's nor the world's. God bless PBS and NOW! Poster: steve schoby Comment: This does not surprise me. The Republican party has aligned itself to closely to religious conserative right wing politics. Why would I say such a thing like right wing religious politics? Where else would you find a group as self centered in rightous as those who believe that can do no wrong since god as chosen them to lead the rest of the world. Who else could justify the perverted corruption of the constitution, for the sake of money and the convertion to god other then this group. Is there a growing movement towards dictatorship? I can easily understand the fear of discovery by the president of exposing an attempt to rig an election. I can also understand why the 4 attempts to impeach him have all been defeated since such an exposure would ruin the Republican party to the point that it would be decades for any could be elected to dog catcher. It matter nothing to me which party wins the White House. What does matter is which party remembers what this nation was founded on The consitution says WE THE PEOPLE. its does not say ALL ABOUT ME. Poster: Pat, Idaho Comment: Insuring that all citizens can vote, and that all votes are counted accurately, is the most critical function of a democractic government. Unfortunately, in America, we are far from having those assurances. Thank you! And, please keep on reporting about the many loopholes and opportunities for corruption in our election processes. People need to know so they can demand safer and more efficient voting systems nationwide. Poster: Mary Comment: I wasn't surprised to hear of voter caging in the past elections but I was horrified to hear that the Republican party is trying to intercede with the upcoming Presidential Election. This is very frightenting! The public needs to be very, very aware of this potential problem! It is amazing that the other 4 major news medias have not picked up this story. Out journalist are what keeps democracy working; making our government to be accountable. Thank you for educating us, the voters. Poster: Bring my country back Comment: Thanks David B for bringing this up in the US media, let's hope other mainstream media outlets pick it up. I have been aware of this voter caging scheme for months. Why hasn't it been covered by other journalists? To me that is a story in itself... I believe the voter caging is just one of the many illegal acts that AG Gonzalez and the Bush administration is trying to hide. If Gonzalez is gone and they have to get a new player, he might not go along with the rules and their house of dirty and illegal acts will start to crumble. Therefore Gonzalez will never resign. Congress must keep up their vigilance on this administration. Poster: Dorothy Fadiman Comment: Thank you for producing and airing a bold program that documents this crucial subject: voter disenfranchisement. I especially appreciated hearing from Greg Palast - a hard hitting, well-informed believable investigative journalist. His conversational way of communicating balanced well with David Iglesias's more formal, yet courageous way of sharing his knowledge and concerns. We need more programming that takes on such important subjects. Dorothy Fadiman Poster: ferrah Comment: I was outraged by this. Not in the least bit surprised, but outraged all the same. I knew there was a reason I never vote for president. This country is messed up and being run straight into the ground. The sad thing is...Bush will have already served all his terms and ruined this country before anything will happen to him over his crooked and illegal ways! This is a terrible shame, but never put it past a Bush to lie and manipulate the entire country! He should be brought up on criminal charges! The entire administration should be. Poster: Terry Oatley Comment: Once again the program NOW distorts the truth and attempts to advance its left wing agenda by telling only part of the story. What was obviously missing is how the Democratic Party routinely registers illegal aliens, dead people and others who otherwise would be ineligible to vote. Or how they register and pay derelicts with cigarrettes and booze to vote Democrat. Also,it was in fact, the Democrats who tried to block the military votes coming from overseas in 2000, knowing full well the military votes overwhelmingly Republican. In my view, these letters were sent out to counter the Democrats underhanded methods of fraudulent voter registration and not to block legal voters. The one-sided pro Left/Democrat agenda that comes thru on PBS is the reason I no longer financially support it. It is also the reason I have earged my representatives to cut off public tax payer funds. Poster: Richard L McKinney Jr Comment: I am personally glad that some one is at least opening they eyes of some people on what is happening to them. Seeing how I am Native American and I found out that there is a 2000% chance that my vote will be changled, and now I know what to do if they try this criminal act. Poster: Katherine Mull Comment: Quite frankly I am appalled. I do not belong to a minority racial group but I staunchly believe that we all must have equal access to the power of the ballot box. Shame on any party or group that goes about challenging a voter's right to have access to the ballot box based on such devious means. We all need to raise an outcry over this. Thanks you for airing this story. Please continue to inform your viewers on topics neglected by others. Thanks very much for all your stories and coverage. Katherine Mull, citizen Poster: Greg Comment: Outrageous! Thank you for reporting this! We need accountability immediately! Poster: Randall Comment: Par for the course! Poster: DB Comment: Disgraceful behavior on the part of the GOP. Shame on them!! Poster: Peggy Clay Comment: Thank God for PBS. I didn't understand what all the fuss was about. Why isn't the mainstream media talking about caging? Why aren't they going into details? The public would be interested if they knew why the firings are important. Poster: edith groner Comment: Thank you for talking about the Republican Party voter caging scandal and the disefrranchisement of minorities and democrats from voting. Karl Rove and others need to go to jail for their felonies against voters. Thank you Greg Palast and Now for publicizing this. Keep reporting on voting fraud and electronic voting machine fraud again Democrats in past elections. We want more coverage on this issue up to the election to inform the public of this outrageous stealing of elections by criminal actions of the Republican party and its operatives. Poster: Diane Meade Comment: Nothing about this bunch in the White House surprises me anymore. I watch pbs all the time so I can find out the truth about what is going on. Now is a great show I watch everyweek. Poster: Marilyn Morgan Comment: What can we do as citizens to prevent voter caging in future elections? I believe this is of vital concern to the American electorate. Who should we contact? Our own senators and representatives? Is that enough? I think the practice is deplorable. Poster: SamanthaHope Comment: I just want to end this surreal American experience. I am from a southern state and have always stood up for citizens rights on many issues supporting equality - and post katrina black voters vanishing I would imagine gave great comfort to those in charge of managing the resources that would allow them to return and/or rebuild....and it also explains the unreal and pathetic response by Bush & Co. Yes the story on caging for sure reminds me that the Katrina fiasco was by design and with purpose and yes EVIL is alive and kicking planning to expand this effort in 08. New Orleans left in chaos to see that voters in the state's largest dem areas could not return---golly gee when you see the story on caging it is no longer a theory but a very real possibility the desperation to do such unjustice under the banner of justice is beyond wrong....those serving our country in the military targeted?? UNREAL. I look to myself and others --how can we allow this to happen? We must get to the bottom of this and we must hold the responsible parties accountable and we must demand that media get honest or get out of our lives....this failure to bring this forward is criminal in all ways if you ask me.... This is too serious to ignore.....Voting rights and civil rights based on junk mail being returned? Black service men and college students targeted based on race? This is the most un American action to date if you ask me--the key to the war machines must be kept close to the chest I suppose---but not if we demand something better knowing full well our nation can't survive without our voice and actions demanding justice for voters on this CAGING fiasco. I am sick over this- and how wrong the right continues to be to the demise of our nation and her people. Poster: Harriet Comment: I volunteered at the Dem. hdqrts in Cuyahoga County in 2004. I worked on the phones. On election day I had trouble calling voters - I had to dial their numbers 3 times because the first 2 times I heard a disconnect recording. The day before the election when we were expecting bus loads of volunteers from the East Coast our only toilet broke - we had to rent portapotties. On election day voters called saying that they had moved and had proof of registration but they were told that couldn't vote because they weren't listed at the pols and they weren't allowed to fill in provisional ballots. These may all be coincidences, but tonight's program makes me wonder....thanks for your excellent reporting Poster: Kathy Comment: I've heard Greg Palest on talk radio and read his book. Voter caging doesn't surprise me. I recall the exit polls during the '04 election...Republicans stole the election...hopefully US citizens will wake up. Poster: Manuel Molina Comment: There is so much smoke surrounding the White House that I still don't understand how the Democrats have not been able to impeach Bush and Cheney. Maybe what democrats need is a strong leadership. Unfortunetely, Ms. Pelossi does not seem to be doing her job well in that respect. As a Democrat I feel frustrated by this apparent weakness within our party. Poster: YvonneCa Comment: Finally. Thank you, PBS and NOW for covering this story. Poster: Sean Casseday Comment: Amazing the very day you run this story the state of Washington charges employees of ACORN, the very organization Iglesius would not investigate, with the biggest voter fraud case in the states history. And it just so happens the fraud was in King County, the very county Democrats just kept recounting in 2004 until they got the results they wanted. Maybe there was something to the allegations by Republicans. But you wouldn't want that to taint your far left accusations of voter suppression. I may be different from you, but I don't want dead people voting. This isn't Mayor Daly's Chicago. I don't want minors voting. I don't want illegal aliens voting. Every U.S. adult citizen deserves the right to vote if they are not a felon, but only once! Acorn appears to not follow this theory. You should have story, just as long, about this fraud or your journalistic integrity is right where I know it is.If you get any farther left you will be swimming in the Pacific. Poster: Barbara Bellows-TerraNova Comment: Thank you for covering Voter Caging. It is very difficult to support a president when you know what he and his people have done to get into office. And from the get-go, we've been cheated. And so has the rest of the world. Keep up the good work, and keep up your willingness to examine stories that other mainstream press is avoiding. Poster: Siddika Comment: You did an excellent job on the voting piece, but much more good reporting on this crucial topic is needed before November 2008. Electronic voting machines are, in my opinion, the scariest and most profound threats to our democratic process. What is being done to insure that all votes placed on such machines (manufactured by private, often Republican-owned companies) are counted and tabulated accurately? What has been done to make certain that voters don't have to wait eight, nine and more hours in the rain to cast their ballots (as in Ohio in 2004)? Mark Crispin Miller makes a persuasive case that more Democratic Senators and Representatives were ACTUALLY elected in 2006 than the vote count indicated. Please have him on soon, because we need time to straighten out the system before the next election. Also, as a citizen, I want to know what Democratic and non-partisan groups who have power over national elections are doing NOW to stop abuses in voting. We Americans NEED to know and we need to known soon. Thank you! Poster: Ted Saito Comment: I felt this program about caging was so biased against the Republican party, it made me sick. Why can't you be more neutral in presenting your views and stop pandering to the far left of the political spectrum. I would be very happy to financially support your station, however, I don't want to perpetuate your left sided, radical diatribe and waste my money. Poster: Dana Bonstrom Comment: So glad to see this report! As a listener to Air America Radio, I am well aware of Greg Palast's reporting, and have been similarly aware of the caging issue for almost two years. It's refreshing to see a U.S. media concern discussing this issue. Here's hoping the rest of the main stream media feel compelled to follow on. I highly recommend Palast's ARMED MADHOUSE, recently published in a 2nd edition, to anyone who doesn't know his fine work, or who desire insight into the length and breadth of the current administration's multifarious (and nefarious) deceptions. Poster: Roger Creedon Comment: Your report on voter caging was very one sided. 1) You didn't mention a single instance of voter registration fraud. This is a serious ommission. The current system is rife with opportunities for voter fraud, and for people to register in multiple jurisdictions. 2) How does simply challenging voters registration deny someone a right to vote. You falied to make a stong connection. Poster: Typical suburban mom Comment: Omigosh, can the ruling Republicans get any sleazier? Pheh! Poster: Gomer McFlarp Comment: Everyone who applies for a drivers license should be registered to vote. This way even the people with the least interest in their government will have an equal voice to those who are deeply informed and involved. Poster: Mike Shelby Comment: ELECTION INTEGRITY IS NOT ABOUT RIGHT OR LEFT, IT'S ABOUT RIGHT OR WRONG! Brilliant program, absolutely brilliant! As a long time election integrity advocate/activist in Arizona I and my fellow patriots (sorry, but your program really has me fired up!) have for years been trying to expose the assault on our elections by Republicans. From the bogus Help America Vote Act (HAVA) to all the problems with electronic voting machines including hacking, tampering, secret software, absence of security, vote flipping, to crooked Republican vendors and testing labs, to crooked Republican politicians, to a crooked Republican National Committee - convincing average people that the theft of their votes is a reality has been more than difficult. Your program tonight will go a long way to waking up those people who have been having problems getting their heads around something so egregious, so monumental, so unconscionable that actually believing that elections are stolen is just too hard to accept. Tonight's progam will go a long way toward helping all of us understand the very clear and present danger the Republican Party poses to American democracy. I hope your viewers seek out local election integrity activists or political parties, which cleary is NOT the Republican party, that support honest and accurate elections to help them make sure the 2008 election isn't stolen, too. ELECTION INTEGRITY IS NOT A PARTISAN ISSUE. ELECTION INTEGRITY IS PATRIOT ISSUE. Poster: Ruth Comment: I was angry enough last year after being asked for ID at a polling place where I'd worked as a worker before that I wrote about it online. In retrospect, it was odd that I noticed. It was equally odd that I noticed a newspaper column less than two inches high announcing the replacement of so many U.S. Attorneys all at once... The story was compelling, so are the links that work Poster: Richard Jones Comment: Great reporting. I am so damn mad. How is it possible that this story is coming out so late? It has been ignored by all of the MSM. Please someone explain to me how this is not a crime and why Mr. Griffin/Rove should not be facing jail? Poster: Conrad R. Wurtz Comment: Excellent program, in depth and stinulating. I hope this will be followed up by increasingly in depth reports. I have read some of Palast's material, but he needs to dig deeper and so does David B. How about suggestions to write specific persons both inside and out of government. How about interviews with some of the Senators and Representatives involved as the investigation(s) proceed. How about organizations that are working on the issue, relevant websites, etc. Thank you for NOW...keep improving it. Poster: Charlotte Coleman Comment: I appreciate the topic that was covered by NOw to highlight the 21st century attack on African American voters and our service personnel. But I would like to know how will African American and other registered voters that will vote in 2008, the same class of voters that are the intended target of GOP caging schems, receive protection under the Voting Rights Act? I would like to see more investigative reporting done by US reporters and accountability by G.O.P. members to end these criminal practices. Also, what are the Democrats doing to get the word out to the public so that voters will have a voice and opportunity to defend their constitutional right to vote. Poster: Ed Dawson Comment: Good show! It made clear how far this administration will go to manipulate the legal system to serve their purposes and frustrate true democracy. Poster: Leslie Johansen Comment: I believe I heard an NPR report this morning on the local station WXEL (Palm Beach Cty) of the supposed unearthing of voter fraud in the county. The Republican Party of Palm Beach Cty claims that a certain number of voters also voted in NY in 2006. I think the number is c. 60 or so, mostly Democrats. I'm not sure that they claim voting in both districts or just registering in both. Perhaps you can pursue this line? Report in the Sun-Sentinel - http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/palmbeach/sfl-flpvotefraud0727pnjul27,0,6696547.story Poster: Jane Dooley Comment: In 1968, I was a college senior, just turned 21, eager to vote in my first election. I registered in Greencastle, Indiana, where I attended school. I was among the first voters that November day, intending to vote before going to class. Apparently the city precinct folks - all Republicans - felt that students would vote for the Democratic candidate, so they challenged - for residency - any voter who appeared to be a student. So I was turned away from my first election. Later in the day students disguised themselves, dressing more like townfolk - they got through to vote. But by the time legal aid arrived to help those of us who'd been challenged, the polls were closed. So the Republicans have been disenfranchising perceived Democrats for quite a while - forty years that I'm aware of. Poster: Anotherbrick Comment: IMPEACH THE ENTIRE EXECUTIVE BRANCH!!!! Is it possible to perform a citizen's arrest on the people involved????? Poster: KF Comment: Thank you for this insightful piece. Some of the best reporting on television I've seen in a long time. You've become my favorite investigative newsmagazine. Poster: James Correia Comment: Was any votors rights infringed? Were they allowed to vote? Were white communities also caged? Poster: Judith E Gilpin Comment: The last two major elections totally took me by surprise, in their results, from how I understood people to be feeling. However, this makes more sense of it. I knew the 2000 election was stolen; the caging makes such sad sense of 2004. What kind of democracy does the Bush administration want...anywhere? This is truly chilling. Poster: Raymond Redman Comment: I just got through watching your piece about voter caging, and I have to admit it made me sick to my stomach. I'm an African American that spent 23 years in the U.S. Army. Now I have to ask myself what kind of country did I put my life on the line for. Now we're in Iraq, telling people how to live, yet this country is still a racist nation, and the Bush Administration has done more to undermine the Constitution than any other Administration in modern times. The Republicans have painted themselves as the righteous religious folks when they are really a bunch of racist human rights violators. I'm sure that those countries that we've stuck our unwanted noses into must really be laughing at this country and spreading the word. |
