One of the most popular of all patent cures was Miss Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, which sold millions of bottles. After being widowed in 1875, Miss Pinkham invented her cure for "all those painful Complaints and Weaknesses so common to our best female population." The compound was almost 20% alcohol. It made Miss Pinkham one of the most successful business women in history.
