It seems like a well researched book, although many over-statements [Muslim intellectual life "dominated" by Christians and Jews] and some contentious statements abound.

Hence the number of Christians declining from 1200-1500, and not earlier, is both proof of Muslim protection, as William above graciously points out, and also the eventual monumental success of the Sufis, who are highly regarded by those who to this day are still Christian in the Muslim world.
It is the 19th century decline of Sufism and the arrival of Salafi Reformism and other modernist movements that's directly behind the intolerance as in the murder of the Iraqi priests.

Well that's my 2 cents. Thanks for the exhaustive review.

Of course the author in his telling of how the Christian churches survived in lands where Islam ruled fails to state that this was because of the protection and direction of the Prophet Muhammad.
But then this is a Christian history and so the bias of the author can be excused.

I had no idea about patriarchs in Seleucia and other parts of Asia; the church history class I took years ago truncated that part of the church from its history since they were "heretics". I am now glad to hear this unspoken story of the "lost Christians". I hope to buy the book in order to learn from these lost brothers and sister who have been brought back into the Christian family by historian Jenkins. Thank you!

All of this is wonderful revisionist history, Great! But, the Only Issue is; "Was Jesus the Son of God, and Is the Bible Real?" Absolutely everything else is semantics, and political justification for one group over another, and purely nothing else! It is like arguing over how long creation was? Will it change anything if you actually knew?

It appears that he says nothing about the destruction of the Greek Orthodox Communities accross Turkey (1913-1922). 3.5 millenia of
Greek presence and 2 millenia of Greek Orthodox presence were erased within a few years through progrom, massacres and genocide.
