Electoral math: Biden leads early

At the moment, Biden has 131 electoral college votes to Trump’s 92, though the 15 battleground states that hold the most electoral college votes have yet to determine a winner. A candidate needs 270 votes to win — and it’s still a long road to that number.

Polls will close in Iowa, Montana, Nevada and Utah at 10 p.m. ET. Iowa is up for grabs this year after President Trump won Iowa in 2016 and President Obama won the state in 2012. Nevada, which has sided with the winner in every election since 1980, with the exception of 2016, is also a state to watch.

Eyes on Michigan

Yamiche Alcindor reports that sources from President Donald Trump’s campaign remain optimistic but recognize that “it’s anyone’s race.” They’re keeping a particular eye on Michigan, a coveted battleground state that helped Trump secure the presidency in 2016, when he edged out Hillary Clinton by just 0.3 points. Polls closing in 14 states including Arizona, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Texas

Polls will close at 9 p.m. ET in Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Michigan and Wisconsin, which President Donald Trump flipped in 2016, paving his path to victory through the Rust Belt, are both critical battleground states in this election. But a winner is unlikely to be declared in either tonight. Wisconsin is one of four states that does not start processing mail-in ballots until Election Day, and Michigan has seen more legal battles over voting this year than any other state in the country.

Arizona and Texas, two typically red states, are also in play this year and rated toss-ups by the Cook Political Report after changing demographics in the states have shifted them left. Meanwhile, Minnesota, where Hillary Clinton won in 2016, is the only blue state with the potential to shift red, as reflected by Trump’s multiple campaign visits to the state.
