WATCH: U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin holds news conference with Canadian counterpart

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin welcomed his Canadian counterpart to Washington, D.C. for talks on a number of important bilateral issues, including the war in Ukraine, security in the Arctic region and relations with China and the Indo-Pacific.

“We don’t have a better friend than Canada,” Austin said. “You’re more than a deeply trusted neighbor. You are an invaluable friend and a steadfast ally.”

Austin and Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand joined other NATO officials in Germany for talks about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Thursday’s meeting at the Pentagon comes as President Joe Biden announced plans to ask Congress for another $33 billion dollars to aid Ukraine with more military and humanitarian assistance in 2022.

Austin thanked Canada on Wednesday for its working training Ukrainian troops, called “Operation Unifier.” And he applauded Ottawa for increasing its contribution of heavy equipment to bolster Ukraine’s defenses.

Anand said Canada is actively looking for more ways to help Ukraine in the months ahead.She also said that Canada is boosting its defense spending in 2022.She said that Ottawa is “committed to confirming significant additional investments to support continental defense and modernization.”
