At least 162 dead after strong quake topples houses in Indonesia’s Java

A strong, shallow earthquake has toppled buildings and walls on Indonesia's densely populated main island, killing at least 162 people and injuring hundreds of others as residents fled into the street, some covered in blood and debris.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck Java, the most populous Indonesian island, minutes before midnight Friday, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Geological Survey.
