It's a year that will be remembered as one that ended authoritative regimes in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen. In 2011, the most-wanted fugitive in the world was killed in Pakistan and severe weather battered the global population.

The U.S.-led war in Afghanistan began on Oct. 7, 2001. Soon after, the ruling Taliban regime fell, followed by the formation of a new government and Afghans holding their first parliamentary elections in more than 30 years.
