French police officer and Muslim Ahmed Marabet was one of two officers killed in a gunfight with the three shooters who killed the newspaper staffers. As an AOL article explained, Marabet died defending a newspaper that openly mocked and ridiculed his religion. The hashtag was created to bring attention to both Marabet and the Muslim population in France, the largest in Western Europe. Several Muslim worship sites were targeted after Wednesday’s killings, with several reported attacks on French mosques Wednesday night. I am not Charlie, I am Ahmed the dead cop.
