The King, who as the Prince of Wales had often used a smattering of Welsh in official speeches after taking lessons, gave his speech in Welsh and English. He said he felt “immense gratitude for the privilege” of serving for decades as Prince of Wales, the title traditionally bestowed on the heir to the throne. His eldest son, Prince William, now has that title. The king and Camilla, the queen consort, were greeted by cheering crowds in Cardiff.
