blue and yellow paper flower bouquet on table.

Children love to express how much they love their moms, aunties, and grandmas. Each of my four sons have wanted to give their special loved ones gifts for Mother’s day. They especially like it when they can make something on their own and it was a total surprise!

Show your child how they can make a bouquet of Forget-Me-Not flowers — the state flower of Alaska — by using blue and yellow paper. Or make a bouquet of paper flowers in any color you like! You can also make as many layers and patterns with the paper that you like. Encourage your child to think about the person they are making the flowers for. Ask them questions, such as “What colors do you think Grammy would like in her bouquet?” or “Do you think Auntie would prefer this pattern or that one?”

Materials

Directions

1

Cut out a 4 by 4 inch square of blue paper. Cut out a 2 by 2 inch square of yellow paper. Your squares don't have to be perfect.

2

Fold each square in half.

3

Fold the squares in half again.

4

With the opening of the paper facing away and the closed folds towards you, cut a curved shape, as if you are making a heart without a dent in the middle.

5

Open up the folds to reveal the flower petals!

6

Using the point of a pencil, poke a hole in the center of each flower where the folds meet.

7

Next, place the yellow petals on top of the blue petals and poke the pencil all the way through to make the stem. The pencil eraser will hold the blue and yellow papers together.

Repeat the steps above for as many flowers you would like to make.

8

Place the flowers in a vase or cup to create a bouquet! Share with a special loved one as a way to say, “I love you!”
