Make the Purrrfect Kitty Cat Puppet

Xavier worries that Brad won’t be his friend if he is not able to play at the Secret Museum. They travel to meet Fred Rogers, who invites them over to play. There they explore how friends care about each other even when something is wrong. Fred introduces the friends to his very favorite toy, Kitty Cat the puppet, who thinks they are purrrfect just the way they are. Together, Xavier, Brad, Yadina, and Fred enjoy their time together, playing with Kitty Cat the puppet, singing, and just being themselves.
You can help your child understand that what makes them special is being just who they are. Using simple materials including paper, markers, scissors, and glue, create a kitty cat puppet of your own to support your child in learning how to tell others how they feel about them.
Materials
Directions
Draw two triangles that are about two inches tall on your orange paper and cut them out. If you are using white cardstock, color the triangles orange. These will be your kitty cat puppet’s ears.

Once the ears are cut out, use your black marker to color two oval dots in the center of each ear. These will be the ear openings. Set the ears aside.

Draw two long oval shapes that are about three inches long and one inch wide on your orange paper and cut them out. If you’re using white cardstock, color both pieces orange. These will be your kitty cat puppet’s paws.

Then, using your black marker, draw two lines a little less than one inch long from the top of each paw. Set the paws aside.

For your kitty cat puppet’s whiskers, cut out four thin rectangles about one and a half inches long using your black construction paper. If using white cardstock, color each piece black. Set the whiskers aside.

Lay your sock or paper bag down. If using a sock, make sure the top is facing up. This is the same way it goes on your foot. Using your black marker, draw your kitty cat puppet’s eyes, nose, and mouth.

Using your brown marker, draw three lines at the top of your sock or paper bag. These are your kitty cat puppet’s stripes.

Glue your kitty cat puppet’s ears evenly apart at the top of your sock or bag. You can place one on each side of the stripes.

Glue on your kitty cat puppet’s whiskers, placing two on each side of the nose and mouth.

Glue your kitty cat puppet’s paws evenly at the center of each side of your sock or bag. Make sure they are placed under the whiskers. Allow the glue to dry for a few minutes.

Your kitty cat puppet is now complete! Together with your child, use the puppet to talk about ways they are purrfect just the way they are.
