Family dancing together in their living room.

Bust a move, dance and get the wiggles out! Use creative movement (planned or improvised) to help your child express an idea or feeling. Encourage your child to move their body to express or imitate feelings, animals, or even concepts (like plants growing or a rainstorm). Whether you’re crawling or creeping, hopping or galloping together, make some time for learning through play this week and reap the physical and social and emotional benefits!

Questions to Ask Your Child

  1. What does it look like to move your body like a tree in the wind? How about a flower growing?
  2. How can we move our bodies to show what we’re feeling? Are there times when you feel like you don’t want to move?
  3. What does balance mean? What activities do you do that are easier if you can balance?
  4. How can you move your body like a fish? A bird? A cheetah? A spider?
  5. Show and tell me all the different ways you can move. Fast? Slow? Wiggly?

Play and Learn Together With Children 2 to 5

Young children often enjoy participating in group games and circle dances (like the “Hokey Pokey”) that introduce them to the social aspects of music and movement. Help your child develop balance and control by creating an imaginary tightrope with chalk or string indoors or outside. Encourage your child to practice walking on it (you can try, too!). Playing freeze-dance helps children develop listening skills and follow instructions. Join in and laugh at the funny positions you end up in.

Play and Learn Together With Children 6 to 8

Play your children’s favorite music and have a dance party! Create silly dance moves together and take turns making up new moves. Practice your balance with the “tissue dance” — put a tissue on your head and move to the music. See how long you can keep that tissue from falling off!! Or, set up an obstacle course to help your child practice their nature explorer skills of jumping, throwing, balancing, and more!
