Child drinking their pumpkin smoothie next to a carved pumpkin.

Jet and his friends scoop out a lot of goop from his gigantic pumpkin to make it lighter. Sunspot then helps clean up the mess by slurping it up with a straw and producing a giant pumpkin pie. Like Jet, there are lots of things your child can do with pumpkin guts.

Scooping out the goop can be lots of messy fun! Ask your child what can be done with the leftover pumpkin guts after the carving is complete. Can they think of delicious treats to make? Making this pumpkin smoothie recipe together is a great way for your child to practice measuring and mixing ingredients — and it’s yummy too!

Ingredients

Directions

1

Help your child peel and place the banana in a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag. Put the banana in the freezer for a few hours until it’s frozen.

2

Once the banana is frozen, add all the ingredients for the pumpkin smoothie into the blender. Make sure to remove all pumpkin seeds first! As an alternative, you can mash the ingredients together in a bowl and shake the mixture with ice to make it cold. Help your child measure and pour. Invite them to compare the measured ingredients. For example, you can ask them which is bigger, 1 tablespoon or 1 teaspoon?

3

Time to blend! Your child can help you press the button as you blend all ingredients on high to a smooth consistency. As you are blending, ask your child to describe how they think their pumpkin smoothie will taste.

4

Help your child pour their pumpkin smoothie into a cup. They may want to taste a spoonful first to see if they like it. Ask them to describe how it tastes. Can they taste the pumpkin or the banana? Does it taste like something they have had before?

5

If they like the pumpkin smoothie, then invite them to have some more! Celebrate them for trying something new but also for turning pumpkin guts into a smoothie treat they can share with family and friends!
