Recipes tell us the ingredients and steps for creating something to eat. They also help us explore foods we may not usually try, which often leads to some exciting kitchen adventures!

Ask your child if they have ever followed a recipe. Remind your child of a time when you followed a recipe together. Talk about where recipes are found. Cookbooks, family members, famous cooks, and even websites provide recipes. Molly made a recipe book of her favorite recipes. Use this recipe from her cookbook featuring one of her favorite foods — blueberries — then explore variations to create your own recipe with your child!

Ingredients

Note: The recipe below is similar to the Blueberry Milk recipe in Molly’s Recipe Book.

Directions

1

Measure 1/3 cup of blueberries and pour them into the mixing bowl.

2

Add 1 teaspoon of sugar.

3

Use a fork to stir and slightly mash the blueberries.

4

Pour some of the milk (or non-dairy substitute such as almond milk or oat milk) over the blueberries and stir with a spoon until foamy.

5

Add the remainder of the milk to the bowl.

6

Stir and mash the blueberry milk.

7

Wait 10 to 15 minutes for the milk to change its color. As you’re waiting, ask your child, “What color is the milk? Are you surprised? Why or why not?”

8

Pour the milk into glasses and enjoy!

9

Repeat the recipe, using strawberries instead of blueberries. Then try raspberries. Compare the colors. Ask your child how they are different.

10

Ask your child which fruity milk they liked the best. Using the recipe card in Molly’s Recipe Book, write down a recipe to share with your family and friends. Show your child how to include the ingredients in order of when they are used and to number the directions for each step.

We hope you had fun together! Snap a photo of you and your child doing the activity and share it with us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. We’d love to see how it turned out!
