With milder weather and trees and flowers blooming, spring is a great time for hands-on activities that help your child appreciate nature and learn to take better care of the planet, starting in their own community.

Spring can also be a great time to build your child’s science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills without worksheets. No matter how your child learns best, Cyberchase has plenty of ideas for your family to explore the environment and learn STEM concepts along the way.

Here are some fun, “green” ideas, specifically designed for children ages 6 to 8:

  1. 1. Learn about the tiny heroes of our ecosystems – pollinators, like hummingbirds, bees, and bats. Watch the “Missing Bats in Sensible Flats” episode. Next, role play with the PBS KIDS Catch Ya Later Pollinator Game or create your own Portrait of a Pollinator/ Retrato de un polinizador. Then, invite pollinators to your neighborhood with a Wild Bee Hotel or a Colorful Hummingbird Feeder you can make at home.
  2. If you have a yard or green space outside, leave the leaves! A messy yard might not look like what you are used to, but insects and small wildlife love an overgrown yard. Plant native wildflowers to add color and support local pollinators. Watch the Cyberchase episode “Leave the Leaves” to help kids learn what makes a park healthy for plants, animals, and insects, and play this planting puzzle game with your child to design your own ideal park.
  3. Grow your own food from a seed no matter the size of your space. Make a Fruit and Veggie Container Garden/ Huerto de frutas y verduras en macetas using fruit, vegetable or herb seeds, some soil, and recycled containers already at your home such as milk cartons. Or try to start a seedling in an egg carton. Talk about what it takes to grow a healthy garden while watching the “Cyberchase” episode “A Seedy Business.”
  4. Not all gardens have to contain food for humans. Watch “A Garden Grows in Botlyn” to learn about urban gardens. Then, make a miniature flower garden of your own. If you’d rather see what others have created, make a family visit to a public garden.
  5. Explore the concept of food miles by watching the Cyberchase episode, “Journey of a Thousand Food Miles”. Then, look for local foods on your next trip to the grocery store or farmer’s market. Help your child use their math skills to practice adding up food miles by navigating a food mile maze.
  6. Follow your child’s interest in animals by learning more about migration! Check out the Duck Dash accessible game to learn more about challenges that birds face. Then take care of birds traveling through your community while they migrate by making your own window decals.
  7. Appreciate the natural beauty of trees by taking a nature walk and making observations. Ask your child what they notice about the trees in your neighborhood. Then, do a breathing leaf experiment to see how trees turn carbon dioxide into oxygen. Watch the “Buzz and the Tree” episode to learn more about the wonders of trees.

Remember, Earth Day can be every day! Here are some ways you can make it a year-long celebration.
