Days after returning to Lodi, Hamid was approached at home for questioning by the FBI. After hours of interrogation at the FBI offices in Sacramento, Hamid initially denied but eventually confessed to having visited an Al Qaeda training camp. Confronted with Hamid's confession, Umer confessed to having known of his son's attendance at the camp. Both father and son where quickly charged and arriagned, though they later recanted. Federal prosecutors held a widely-publicized press conference announcing the apprehension of "individuals connected with Al Qaeda." They later backed off that assertion.
