In the summer of 2003, Hamid returned to Pakistan to find a bride, a common practice for many Pakistani immigrants in Lodi; Hamid's father, Umer, had arranged his own marriage on a similar trip to Pakistan decades earlier. But Hamid's bride-to-be rejected him, and his mother flew to Pakistan to arrange a second marriage.
