Yalta, Crimea

Yalta was the location of a conference in February 1945 between Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin at which the foundations of the United Nations were laid. Stalinís forces had, by this stage, advanced across large sections of eastern Europe, and despite promises that they would leave democracy in their wake, Churchill left the conference with a sense of foreboding about the balance of power that would emerge after the Second World War.
