Known as the people of the book, Jews valued education long before migrating to the United States. In America, education is the great leveler; it is the one thing that Jewish Americans immediately embraced as a path to opportunity for themselves and their children. As the film clips illustrate, Jews across the board emphasized the importance of education for its own sake and also as a means to an end.
In addition to education, a vital pillar of Judaism is Tzedakah, which literally means righteousness -- doing the right thing. in judaism, giving to poor is not viewed as a generous or magnanimous act, it duty, their due. with this mind, philanthropic jews supported such institutions settlement houses, hospitals, and libraries, all of which served own community non-jews well.
