What does it mean to be Jewish in America today? As Letty Pogrebin says in the film, it's a question of context. For many Jews, issues of identity are not relevant to their everyday lives. However for some, balancing ones Jewish American identity can be challenging. Are we American Jews, Americans without a hyphenated identity, or simply Jewish?

Rabbi Harold M. Schulweis makes the observation that when he was growing up, he went to synagogue because he was Jewish. Now, Rabbi Schulweis says, many Jewish Americans go to synagogue to become Jewish.

Younger Jewish Americans are discovering, interpreting and invigorating their cultural and religious identities. Such is the case with performer, Matisyahu, a Hassidic rapper.
