What gets me out of bed in the morning is the Manheim Gardens Hoophouse mural, literally. For the last four weeks on Saturday mornings, I have been leading teams of talented volunteers in painting a community mural on my most unconventional canvas yet: a greenhouse. Neighbors, some as young as four years old, all had a part in each stage of the project, from base coats to our current detailing phase. Some showed up with no art experience at all. But in just a few hours the same people walked away from each session, eyes lit up with pride in their own handiwork! And those moments are the real reason I get out of bed. Sure, I'm an artist by trade, but I'm an educator at heart. Giving people the freedom to learn and enjoy new experiences as a community during a time of deep grief and isolation is as fulfilling as it is imperative.
