Now is the time to enrich one's life by volunteering. I developed a program called Vet to Vet Maine that aims to alleviate isolation among Maine's veterans. Volunteers who are veterans are paired with veterans who need a friend. They visit on a regular basis. Many develop lifelong friendships. I volunteer as the executive director of the program. One volunteer learned that his veteran's wife had died the year before and he had never been able to see her grave at the state veterans' cemetery. The volunteer packed up the veteran's wheelchair, oxygen tanks, and other medical supplies and drove him to the cemetery, where he wheeled him to the site of his wife's grave and told him to wave when he was ready to leave. That moment brought joy to both veterans. More stories are at Vet2VetMaine.org.
