A day’s work is…
A day’s work is volunteering as an election poll worker from 5:30 am to 9:30 pm. The first time I spent a 16-hour shift monitoring voting machines with 3 new neighbors— an Indian woman who brought us homemade snacks, an Italian lady who knew the best restaurants in town, and a newly naturalized grandfather from Germany giving out retirement advice.

Reps from each party signed in voters at 10 tables in a school gym. Although I was prepared for a contentious day, it was the most pleasant table conversation I had all year! Led by some pretty inspiring citizens whose personal stories and belief in the process and right to vote kept us motivated.

Maybe if we all had to work to become US citizens the voter participation in our country would be greater and we wouldn’t take it for granted.
