Now is the time as warmer weather reaches our tropical shores to celebrate the return of the sea turtles. The U S Virgin Islands has 3 species that lay their eggs on our clean sandy beaches: Leatherbacks, Green, and Hawksbills. The turtles all began their lives on our beaches. Environmental organizations hold beach and reef clean ups to remove debris early each Spring to ensure the turtles do not ingest plastic and other items. The US and USVI Fish & Wildlife Agencies assist the volunteers and visiting scientists and students with the activities, and also are ready to provide medical care should a turtle need special care. Turtles and nesting sites are documented and protected. The beaches are patrolled by volunteers and officials during the long nesting period.
