My American story started when I converted to Islam from Christianity. I was born in Texas and had been attending church every Sunday for the majority of my life. Leaving the Christian church isn't really something people do, and IF they do decide to convert to another religion, it appears to be a difficult pill to swallow if that religion is Islam.
During University I studied all religions which gave me my true first introduction to Islam. During this time I also did an in-depth study of Christianity. As a black American, I am discovering America as if were my very first time. I am the same person, but people see me differently when they see me in a hijab. Last year I took my time adjusting to the process, but this year I am ready to face my fears and live outwardly as a Muslim.
