President Joe Biden thanked the nation’s firefighters Tuesday during a virtual address to the Summit on Fire Prevention and Control.

Speaking from the White House, Biden told firefighters they are “the heart of the community.”

“People don’t appreciate you until they need you. But then they do and, and you’re always there,” Biden said. “Firefighters have saved my life and the life of my family.”

Biden said the impacts of climate change are fueling more wildfires and making the job of firefighters more crucial than ever.

He also said through the American Rescue Plan and the infrastructure bill, his White House will ensure they have all the resources they need to perform their jobs “as safely and effectively and efficiently as possible.”

The summit took place during Fire Prevention Week, which is marking its 100th year of observance.
