Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski signed a deal Wednesday to build a U.S. missile defense base in Poland. The agreement infuriated Russia, which warned of possibly attacking the former Soviet satellite.

Russia ordered a halt to military action in Georgia after five days of clashes over the breakaway region of South Ossetia, but reports continued to emerge of lingering fighting between Russian and Georgian troops.
